If you knew the earth was going to spontaneously combust in a few hours, what would you eat as your final meal? Why are you looking at me so strangely? Hasn't anyone ever asked you that question before? It's a perfectly good question which has been incredibly difficult for me to answer. I love all foods, you see. And to choose just one...it's like having to choose which one of Yoshi's facial expressions I love the most.
I can't. I love them all. This is him in his Spiderman Halloween costume. Sorry, what was I saying?
Last night, I bought this book called "Their Last Suppers," by Andrew Caldwell. If from the title you assume that it's about the last meal someone ate before their death, you would be correct. Sounds morbid right? What makes this book unique is that it combines historical facts with cooking recipes. There are more than 20 famous people featured. Each profile consists of little anecdotes of the person, popular foods from his or her time period, and recipes for that person's actual last meal. Intrigued? Luckily, I picked up an extra copy for you :) Not all of you...just one of you.
THIS CONTEST HAS ENDED For a chance to win this wonderfully intriguing book, leave a comment below telling me about your final meal. If you're not connected to a blog then leave your email address. I'll select one winner at random next week. Contest ends next Saturday, October 16 @ Midnight CST.
CONGRATULATIONS TO ALI OF THREE BAKING SHEETS TO THE WIND!
After much thought I chose something that is both good and simple. It's so simple I'm almost too embarrassed to blog about it. A cheesy fried egg and bacon breakfast sandwich. Here's what you'll need:
English Muffin, toasted
A fried egg, salt and peppered
Crispy bacon
Cheese, the melty kind
Directions...follow them.
Take your toasted English muffin...
and add some cheese. I like to pop it under the broiler for a few seconds to melt the cheese.
add some crispy bacon.
Then top it off with a fried egg.
I like a soft set egg because...Mmmm
My last supper...hmmm, I'd probably want a delicious, homemade lasagna with garlic bread covered in parmesan cheese and a glass of chianti. That would be heavenly!
ReplyDeleteI love anything sweet but I think for my last supper I would have no doubt: a simple pizza margherita with buffalo mozzarella...if the guy who makes it comes from Naples than I would really die happy :)
ReplyDeleteI would have to go with Sauteed Filet Mignon tips over penne pasta with sliced peppers and onions in a tequila lime sauce. This is the best thing I have tasted in a long time.
ReplyDeleteMy last meal would be a mismash of my favorite things at the moment...
ReplyDeleteMozzarella sticks with honey mustard
Dr. Pepper
Kitsune Udon
Pat Bing Su
Coconut Boba Tea
Grilled cheese with sourdough bread and thick melty cheese, with fresh strawberries on the side. After all, if it's my last meal I want comfort food!
ReplyDeleteOoh, this is my kind of book.
ReplyDeleteIt took me all of thirty seconds to decide that I would like an overflowing plate of my own spaghetti bolognese as my last meal...with lots of wine. If I'm not in a position to make my own last meal, I'll take foie gras and lots of it.
Thanks for this giveaway!
I'd probably go for steak oscar, caesar salad and truffle mac and cheese... I've read a bit about the book and it sounds fascinating!!! Kate @kateiscooking
ReplyDeleteSpideryoshi! So so so cute.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad I'm not alone in my fascination! There's a site called "Dead Man Eating" that is along the same lines that is pretty interesting, once you get past the morbidity of each story.
My last meal: my Dad's teriyaki skewers, sticky rice, goteburg sausage, a fudge brownie and a Belgian tripel served in a tulip glass.
Very cool giveaway, Christa :)
My final meal would start with a glass of 12 year old Glenlivet Scotch, fried calamari as an appetizer. I'd have an Italian bean salad before the main dish, which would be a a pizza with sliver-thin roma tomatoes laid down over a crispy, thin whole wheat crust, basil, mozzarella, red onions, marinated mushrooms and crumbled Italian sausage. A nice, dark Chianti to drink, during dinner, followed by Limoncello as a digestivo. I'd have apple pie a'la mode and a double espresso for dessert and a pint of Yuengling as a night cap.
ReplyDeleteA Chinese banquet style dinner. Not very humble but I'm ready to get my hands dirty. Send over more crab and lobster, please. :)
ReplyDeleteDolsot bibimbap, of course! Hot stone bowl, white rice topped with namul (seasoned vegetables), chili pepper paste, a fried egg and bulgogi meat on top. Nom nom nom... Traditional Korean side dishes and fried yaki mandu to compliment!
ReplyDeleteThank you all for participating! I loved reading through all your favorite "lasts"!
ReplyDeleteI cannot wait to read this book. Thanks for such a cool giveaway, Christa :) Which email would you like me to send my info to?
